A planned tooth extraction is different from an emergency extraction. In a planned extraction, the tooth needs to come out, but the situation is not urgent. Common reasons include severe decay that cannot be restored, advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, teeth that need to be removed before orthodontic treatment, and impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth.

Dr. Torres approaches every extraction with the goal of making it as smooth and painless as possible. The area is thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia. For anxious patients, we discuss sedation options. Most simple extractions (where the tooth is visible and accessible) take about 20 to 30 minutes.

Surgical extractions are needed when the tooth is broken below the gum line, impacted, or has curved roots. These require a small incision in the gum and sometimes removal of a small amount of bone around the tooth. Surgical extractions take 30 to 45 minutes.

After the extraction, you will bite on gauze for about 30 minutes to form a blood clot. We give you detailed aftercare instructions to prevent dry socket (a painful condition where the clot dislodges). Most patients heal completely within one to two weeks.
